We recommend storing them in a password manager (like 1Password, or KeePas), but you can also print them out and hide them if you’d prefer. How can you regain access to your account? With Backup codes!īackup codes are special, random codes we give you after signing up for MFA. What happens when the worst case scenario happens? You’ve registered your security key, but your laptop’s been stolen or configured your Authenticator, but lost your phone. Since you can only use SMS if you already have an Authenticator App enabled, you should really think carefully about whether it’s worth adding a more easily stolen MFA after setting up a better option with your Authenticator App. Hackers have been able to intercept text messages or call up phone carriers to do a “SIM Swap” attack and take over phone numbers. If we can be transparent with you, SMS MFA is better than no MFA, but not by a lot. But these codes are still phishable, so if you lose your phone, this could lead to a predicament. With an Authenticator App, you’ll register a QR code or manually enter a key with an app on your phone or a password manager and then generate a new code for you to use every 30 seconds.Īs long as you have your phone or access to your password manager, you can make new codes and hackers will have a hard time getting access to your app. Plus the name makes us think we’re in a spy novel. The Authenticator App is an excellent choice that mixes flexibility with security. For all you Discord Developers out there, we’re working on adding Security Keys to the Developers space, but in the meantime, if you want to use Security Keys for your account, you should keep your Authenticator App enabled to get access to your Apps! Authenticator App This method is the best way to protect your account because it is simple to use, on your own devices, backed up in the cloud, and, most importantly, phishing resistant. And to be clear, we’re never given any biometrics data from your device. Whenever you want to use the passkey, you authenticate using your biometric so that your device sends the passkey data to Discord. The way this works is when you register a passkey for Discord, you’ll protect it using your biometric (fingerprint or face) and the key itself lives on your device and in your provider’s cloud (e.g. FaceId, TouchId, Windows Hello) to gain access to your account. This is the latest in personal security, and also the most secure! With Security Keys, you’ll be able to use a passkey (ex. We’ll talk through each option and give you some info on the security of each one. You can choose any one of these options or any combo, but there are positives and negatives to each. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA for short) is the best way to add an extra layer of security to your Discord account to make sure that only you have the ability to log in. ![]()

![]() ![]() It has to sell the naturally difficult concept of Lovecraftian horror in a clean, artful manner on a budget that would last 60% of a year at Lakeside. Of course, you can guess what happens, but having more mystery on the outside would have significantly increased the efficacy of the final reveal.Īll things considered, “Overlord” is a miracle of a short film. I think it’d have worked better if more of the task force stationed outside was disappearing throughout the movie. Additionally, some of the film seems unfinished. Some people argue that the dialogue serves only as a vessel to appease the airsoft fanboys, but it’s part of the concept. ![]() Some of the banter feels a tiny bit contrived, but it picks up later in the film. Most of my problems come with the execution of the script, as most of the actors are volunteers and selected for their experience in weapons and armaments. However, I do have a few very minor nitpicks. Having several veterans on-hand and an extremely well-versed military advisor tends to help. Their attire is appropriate for their role, military lingo spot-on, and communications entirely accurate. They weigh the mission’s importance with the costs the task force may take on, and advise them to pull out when the task force believes they come across something too much for them to handle.Īs is probably obvious, the entire cast of “Overlord” is either ex-military or heavily trained. Even mission control is calm, quick, and cooperative. In a Hollywood that very rarely prioritizes realistic military operations, “Overlord” is a breath of fresh air. They don’t stumble over themselves, are uniform in their actions, are always alert, and are effective and efficient. They show fear in their voices and facial expressions, but they execute their objectives in a professional and calm manner. In the film, they are well-trained, highly effective professionals brought in by an extremely powerful Non-Governmental Organization to take on threats that go against the laws of physics, and they behave as such. Importantly, the characters are believable. Oftentimes it only uses one or two notes, a high note and a low note, taking advantage of the psychology that high tones are “small” or “harmless,” and low tones “heavy” or “large,” and therefore “threatening.” It’s a time-old horror technique, to confuse the brain into feeling anxious. Much of the time it consists of ambient sounds and feels passive to let the viewer take in the impressive shot composition. The soundtrack is also great, if a bit Zimmer-esque. ![]() It reinforces the anomalous nature of whatever the task force is up against, it builds up fear and suspicion of what isn’t there. Additionally, “Overlord” makes use of negative space to give a feeling that there is something in the air that we aren’t seeing: the camera often lingers on empty hallways a tad too long, or on an empty doorway even if it seems like nothing is there. The lighting, through both natural overcast skies and forced darkness, adds a feeling of uneasiness everything is too bright. The long-takes add to this smooth sense of professionalism, as well as adding tension by feeling as if anything could happen, and you are right along with the task force members. The camera is always where it needs to be, always moving like a buttered-up snail that provides a measure of the calm, composed, professional nature of the task force members. This inexpensiveness is extremely well-covered up, winning several awards from the Tampa Bay Underground Film Festival (Best Short Film, Best Short Film Director, Best Cinematography, Best Effects, Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film). “Overlord” was made on a measly budget of $23,000, barely enough to buy a newline Toyota Prius. However, they soon discover an anomaly that they are not equipped to handle. Their objective is to retrieve data, clear the area, then pull out to let the heavy-duty task forces to take over. “Overlord” follows members of two Mobile Task Forces, investigating the disappearances of several people related to an esoteric cult based in a rural farmhouse. “SCP: Overlord” is one of a few fan-made films based on the ethos of the titular SCP Foundation: a horror-based, community-driven hub based on writing “SCPs”, objects deemed anomalous and dangerous to public consensus of normalcy. ” instead of “Bigfoot, a monstrous ape-like creature, towering over the humans at its feet as it reigned over the night.” Much of the horror elements in “SCP: Overlord” come from these cold descriptions, and your mind fills in the rest. ![]() As such, something like Bigfoot would be called “SCP-1000, a nocturnal, omnivorous ape, classified in the Hominini branch along with genera Pan and Homo. Observing Diffraction in Lightĭue to the much wider range of areas in which light diffraction has been applied by scientists, diffraction of light and not sound will be the principal topic for the remainder of this essay. Chances are, then, that the most easily audible sounds from inside the concert hall are the bass and drums higher-pitched notes from a guitar or other instruments, such as a Hammond organ, are not as likely to reach a listener outside. As with light waves -though, of course, to a much lesserĮxtent -short-wavelength sound waves are less capable of diffracting around large objects than are long-wave length sound waves. The higher the pitch, the greater the frequency, and, hence, the shorter the wavelength. Whereas differing wavelengths in light are manifested as differing colors, a change in sound wavelength indicates a change in pitch. Wavelengths for visible light range from 400 (violet) to 700 nm (red): hence, it would be possible to fit about 5,000 of even the longest visible-light wavelengths on the head of a pin! Light waves, on the other hand, have a wavelength, typically measured in nanometers (nm), which are equal to one-millionth of a millimeter. The waves by which sound is transmitted are larger, or comparable in size to, the column or the door -which is an example of an aperture -and, hence, they pass easily through apertures and around obstacles. Longitudinal waves radiate outward in concentric circles, rather like the rings of a bull's-eye. Sound travels by longitudinal waves, or waves in which the movement of vibration is in the same direction as the wave itself. The reason for the difference -that is, why sound diffraction is more pronounced than light diffraction -is that sound waves are much, much larger than light waves. But, if you moved away from the door and stood with your back to the building, you would see little light, whereas the sound would still be easily audible. And if you stood right in front of the doorway, you would be able to see light from inside the concert hall. The sound quality would be far from perfect, of course, but you would still be able to hear the music well enough. Suppose, now, that you had failed to obtain a ticket, but a friend who worked at the concert venue arranged to let you stand outside an open door and hear the band. Light waves diffract slightly in such a situation, but not enough to make a difference with regard to your enjoyment of the concert: if you looked closely while sitting behind the post, you would be able to observe the diffraction of the light waves glowing slightly, as they widened around the post. But you have little trouble hearing the music, since sound waves simply diffract around the pillar. You cannot see the band, of course, because the light waves from the stage are blocked. Imagine going to a concert hall to hear a band, and to your chagrin, you discover that your seat is directly behind a wide post. HOW IT WORKS Comparing Sound and Light Diffraction (Because sound waves are much larger than light waves, however, diffraction of sound is a part of daily life that most people take for granted.) Diffraction of light waves, on the other hand, is much more complicated, and has a number of applications in science and technology, including the use of diffraction gratings in the production of holograms. Any type of energy that travels in a wave is capable of diffraction, and the diffraction of sound and light waves produces a number of effects. Diffraction is the bending of waves around obstacles, or the spreading of waves by passing them through an aperture, or opening. ![]() ![]() ![]() Those who are still growing up are often identified and given extra support.
